In June, 2006, Pittsford Musicals presented area high school seniors with scholarships. The funds for the scholarships were generated by the 2005 production of Fiddler on the Roof. From Pittsford Sutherland High School: Sean Hingel will attend American Musical and Dramatic Academy for an integrated program in musical theatre in pursuit of a BFA in Theatre. At SHS Sean was active in several choirs and drama club as well as sports such as swimming, diving and volleyball. He won numerous art and drama awards and he was All County in diving. His recent stage roles included Riff in WEST SIDE STORY and Snoopy in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN. Sean enjoys his theatrical roles on stage because “I have always been at my best when performing on stage and am able to transform into an entirely different person.” Lucas Syed will double major in Fine Arts/Animation and Writing/Literature at the Parsons School of Design and Eugene Long College. At SHS Lucas was secretary of the Drama Club and managing editor of the literary magazine. He also was in show choir, symphony orchestra and men’s glee club. He won awards in English, Science, Music and French. His play JACK AND JILL was selected for the GEVA Theatre Center’s 2006 Young Writers’ Festival. Not only did he appear as Charlie Brown in YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN but he designed the costumes. His Pittsford Musicals connection is that he was in the orchestra for THE MUSIC MAN in 2003. Lucas sees his involvement in the arts as a way to affect society for the better, to learn from others and “to ‘be the change’ that I wish to see in the world.” From Pittsford Mendon High School:
Alexandra Barbato will major in flute performance and piano at Nazareth College. She intends to pursue both a masters degree and doctorate. At PMHS Alexandra was active in the wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, concert and jazz bands and pit orchestras. She was in the Eastman Flute Choir for four years and participated in All County Band and Orchestra. She won the PTSA Most Musical (Instrumental) Award in 2005 as well as several All-State and All-County awards. Alexandra stresses the importance of music in her life: “My life has been dedicated to music since I was very young…. music is not just for my own purpose but my gift to share with others.” Emily Wells will be a Vocal Performance Major at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse University. At PMHS she appeared in many plays, including the roles of Kim in MISS SAIGON and Mrs. Potts in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. She also was active in the Select Choir, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Polyphonic Choir and Show Choir and was selected for the NYSSMA All-State Woman’s Choir. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was captain of the Girls Swimming and Diving Team. Emily describes singing in choirs and performing in musicals as being her passion in life.” She thanks Pittsford Musicals for its belief in her future and encouragement as she begins her exciting journey towards a career in vocal performance. From East Rochester High School: Chelsea Cosco will attend Manhattanville College to pursue a major in Music Education and a minor in Dance. In high school she had the title role in CINDERELLA and appeared in BYE BYE BIRDIE, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS and numerous other show both for East Rochester, Webster Theatre Guild and the Stars of Tomorrow. She served as assistant choreographer for CINDERELLA and received two Dancer of the Year Awards from Jody B’s Studio of Dance where she is an assistant dance instructor specializing in ballet, tap and jazz. In addition she has been in numerous All-County and All-State Mixed Choirs. Chelsea says that winning the scholarship was important to her because she remembers seeing community theatre scholarship winners when she was growing up and she wants to “be a role model for young performers in the Rochester area just like the scholarship winners were to me.” From Honeoye Falls/Lima High School: Stephanie Fisher will attend Baldwin Wallace College. In high school she appeared in many shows, including THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, ANYTHING GOES, BRIGADOON and GUYS AND DOLLS. She served as vice president of the Drama Club and was on the junior varsity tennis team and the yearbook staff. Musically she has participated in All-County and All-State competitions and numerous Solofestivals. Despite her busy schedule she found time to volunteer for the Seneca Park Zoo, Girl Scouts and the library. She also has a Pittsford Musicals connection, appearing in THE MUSIC MAN and working as an usher and in the box office. Stephanie says that “theatre has always been a huge part of my life, largely thanks to Pittsford Musicals.” From Penfield High School: Kristy Schroeder is the winner of the Bill Weyl Memorial Scholarship. She will attend SUNY Fredonia. At Penfield she was president of the jazz choir and was active in numerous other choirs, including the MENC Honors Choir.
