Before incorporation, the members of Pittsford Musicals were parents and teachers in the Park Road PTSA. In the Fall of 1966, as a surprise to the other parents and teachers, the group, led by Ruth Snelgrove, decided to put on a musical comedy, a lip-sync version of Bye, Bye Birdie. The show was so well received that the group produced a second lip-sync show, The Pajama Game, the following year. A third lip-sync show, Bajour, was produced after incorporation in 1968 and was so financially successful, the group awarded its first scholarships to students at Pittsford and West High Schools. In 1969, the group decided to perform its first "live" production, The Music Man, complete with a singing and dancing cast and an orchestra.
As the group grew in size and reputation, the performance location changed from Park Road School to the Barker Road Junior High, to Pittsford Sutherland High School and then to Pittsford Mendon High School. In 2007, Pittsford Musicals returned to Pittsford Sutherland High School.
Without the greatly appreciated cooperation of the Pittsford School District, Pittsford Musicals would not have been able to bring these shows to the community. To demonstrate this appreciation, Pittsford Musicals has provided technical and financial support to both Pittsford High Schools to help them create their own excellent theatrical productions. The scholarships awarded over the years have amounted to over $237,000.
